COLA 22

COLA 22 features new works by Los Angeles-based artists Najite Agindotan, Nancy Baker Cahill, Sharon Louise Barnes, Suchi Branfman, Shonda Buchanan, Jibz Cameron, York Chang, Danny Jauregui, and Yoshie Sakai. Spanning literature, performance, painting, video, photography, and installation, these works were supported by 2022 City of Los Angeles Independent Master Artist Project (COLA IMAP) grants, awarded by the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). Founded in 1997, COLA IMAP honors the relationship between Los Angeles, its artists, and the City’s identity as an international arts capital.

This is a still image from the digital video artwork Bathroom Stall Tears Part 1 by artist Yoshie Sakai. In the image, Sakai is dressed as a younger version of herself (pictured on the left) and her grandmother (pictured on the right). Both characters are lying down next to each other in a bed underneath the covers of blankets. Their heads are slightly angled towards one another. The top blanket has a floral pattern in neutral shades of taupe, blue, green and red and yellow, while the bottom blanket and pillowcases are a bright yellow color. A dark wooden bed frame is also visible in the image, as well as the nightstand on the right with a lamp. At the bottom of the image is a white colored caption that reads, "Obaa-chan, thank you for always making the “ofuro” (bath) for me.”.
